Teams from Latvia does not qualify for “Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD” finals

“Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD” is annual competition which takes place at the end of January and begining of February. In this team competition the best country is decided in three age groups (U12, U14, U16) for girls and for boys. At beginning are played qualification tournaments and later on – finals.

At girls and boys tournaments qualification rounds are player in four different groups. Every group plays games in different countries. From each group to final qualifies two best teams. Team Latvia this year participated at all age groups for girls and for boys, but unfortunately none of the teams qualified for finals.

The best result from Latvian teams was for U16 girls team, including student from Liepaja Tennis Sports school – Rebeka Margareta Mertena. U16 girls Team Latvia played at Netherlands city Zutphen, where along team Latvia participated teams from Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Cyprus, Great Britain, Romania and Switzerland. Team Latvia captain was Jānis Juška, but in court competed Daniela Vismane, Denīza Marcinkeviča and our Rebeka Margareta Mertena.

At first day our girls won over team Cyprus with a 3-0, but at game for getting into finals, our team lost to Great Britain with a 0-3. In a game for 3rd place team Latvia won over Romania with a 2-1.

At the first day of tournament our Rebeka Margareta Mertena participated at doubles in pair with Denīza Marcinkēviča and with a score 6-3 6-1 won over pair from Cyprus. In second day, playing doubles with Daniela Vismane against pair from Great Britain, in intense game team Latvia lost with a 6-4 2-6 4-6.

In a game for 3rd place in group, Rebeka Margareta Mertena played doubles again with Danielu Vismani and with a score 7-5 6-3 won over pair from Romania, and thereby taking the 3rd place for team Latvia.
